THE KING OF THE PARK

Gran Paradiso National Park.

A land of towering peaks and silent valleys, where nature reigns supreme and every trail tells an ancient story. Whether you are discovering these mountains for the first time or returning once again, Gran Paradiso never fails to amaze with its authentic beauty. From the encounter with the ibex ruling the high cliffs, to the golden eagle soaring above the glittering glaciers, and the alpine blooms that brighten the meadows in summer, this park preserves some of the most precious natural wonders of the Italian Alps.

Discovery

This journey comes to life in the heart of the Western Alps, where valleys carved by time open up between larch forests and snow-capped peaks. It was here that I first set out across these summits, following historic mule tracks and trails winding through flower-filled meadows and crystal-clear streams. Days unfolded among ever-changing panoramas, while nights were marked by silence broken only by the wind and the calls of alpine wildlife.

From close encounters with ibex and chamois, to the majestic flight of the golden eagle and the echo of glaciers dominating the horizon, I felt a sense of pure wonder. The slow rhythm of the mountains offers an intimacy with the landscape that no other kind of journey can provide.

Whether planning a first excursion in the main valleys, embarking on multi-day treks between high-altitude refuges, or following a photographic itinerary in search of lights and colors shifting with the seasons, Gran Paradiso National Park offers a truly authentic adventure. Here, knowing which trails to take, the best time of year to set out, and how to combine high-altitude experiences with the traditions of mountain villages makes all the difference.

Journeys

VALSAVARENCHE

It opens majestically in the heart of Gran Paradiso National Park, offering wide and spectacular views that stretch from the valley floor forests up to the glaciers crowning the highest peaks, including Gran Paradiso itself. Broader and more solemn than its lateral valleys, it unfolds as a succession of unspoiled natural landscapes: centuries-old larches, alpine meadows, and rocky slopes alternate, creating a balance of vastness and harmony.

Wildlife here is rich and visible: ibex and chamois move confidently among rocks and moraines, while golden eagles soar above the ridges, offering moments of wonder and a close look at alpine life.

The trails of Valsavarenche lead to mountain huts and bivouacs, making it possible to enjoy excursions of varying difficulty and high-altitude adventures in both summer and winter. The valley stands out for its openness and brightness, ideal for those who love wide panoramas, photographing the mountains, or tackling more challenging treks while experiencing the grandeur of the Alps to the fullest.

In every season, Valsavarenche tells the story of the strength and beauty of the mountains: winter blankets it in sparkling, silent snow, while spring and summer awaken its blooming meadows and active wildlife, offering a complete and unforgettable alpine experience.

VALNONTEY

It opens like a small gem off the side of the Valsavarenche, narrower and more intimate, with a cozy, wooded character that invites exploration of every corner of the valley. From the valley floor, at around 1,400 meters, up to the pastures and ridges reaching 3,000 meters, the landscape gradually transforms: clear streams flow between wooded slopes and alpine meadows, while the moraines—less extensive than in the main valley—add a touch of ancient glacial geology.

Alpine wildlife is often encountered along the trails: ibex and chamois move nimbly among the rocks and woods, while deer and other more elusive species inhabit the quiet areas, offering close-up observation opportunities for those who move calmly.

The trails in Valnontey are smaller and more accessible than those in Valsavarenche, perfect for day hikes or snowshoeing in winter. Small mountain huts and alpine lodges dot the valley, adding warmth and authenticity to the landscape.

Overall, Valnontey has a compact and serene charm: here, nature seems to envelop those who traverse it, offering picturesque views and a direct connection with alpine life—ideal for anyone seeking tranquility and moments of pure immersion in the mountains.

Best time to visit

Located in the heart of the Italian Alps, Gran Paradiso National Park offers extraordinary mountain landscapes throughout the winter and early spring. During this period, temperatures can be harsh at higher elevations, while the valley floors are milder; the main factor to consider when planning excursions is not so much the cold, but the snow and trail conditions.

From November to December, the first snowfalls transform forests and valleys into muffled, snow-covered scenes, ideal for snowshoeing and winter walks. January and February represent the heart of winter: snow is abundant, and the landscapes reach their peak splendor, perfect for ski mountaineering, guided snowshoe excursions, and observing alpine wildlife leaving tracks in the fresh snow.

With the arrival of March and April, snow begins to melt at lower elevations, streams start flowing again, and the first alpine flowers dot the high-altitude meadows. This is the time when the valley awakens: ibex and chamois move among rocks and slopes, while the longer days allow for panoramic hikes in safety and with milder temperatures.

In every phase of the November–April period, Gran Paradiso offers a unique experience: alpine nature reveals itself in its most authentic form, amidst snowy silences, majestic panoramas, and close encounters with wildlife.

3-DAYS PHOTOGRAPHY ADVENTURE

From close encounters with ibex, chamois, and golden eagles to the golden light of sunrise illuminating snow-capped peaks, the valley offers unique scenes for nature photography. Every trail, forest, and slope becomes a natural set: tracks in the snow, reflections in the streams, and spectacular panoramas provide endless opportunities to capture alpine wildlife and pristine landscapes..
